Argentine’s forward Lionel Messi received a
gruesome treatment by his own country man as Barcelona thumped River
Plate to win the Club World cup.
According to reports, a River plate fans spat at Messi while he and his teammates were making their way back to Spain from Tokyo’s Narita airport
It was gathered that it took the intervention of Javier Mascherano and manager Luis Enrique to ease the rage in Messia as other fans began shouting abuses at the Barcelona talisman.
Luis Suarez was also seen calming down Messi, who had tried to confront the angry fans.
Messi who has endured a rather fraught relationship with Argentine fans in recent years, had earlier scored in the 3-0 victory over River Plate in the final in Yokohama to send his countrymen packing and this may have triggered the fans’ dreadful reactions.
Barcelona picked up their fifth trophy of the year with the comprehensive win over River Plate on Sunday, December 20, with Messi opening the scoring before Luis Suarez netted twice more – the Uruguayan ended the tournament with five goals and the Golden Ball award.
